Bosnia and Herzegovina (abbreviation: BiH or B&H) is one of the youngest countries in Europe. Even if it has become independent in 1992, its roots go back to the ancient past. During its rich history, the area that BiH occupies nowadays has been a host to many civilisations, cultures and religions. The beginnings of civilisation in B&H go way back to the period of Roman Empire. Afterwards came Slav tribes, and in the 15th century territory of today’s Bosnia and Herzegovina was occupied by Ottoman Empire. Four hundred years later Ottoman Empire left and in 1878 Austro-Hungarian Empire came into Bosnia and Herzegovina. Bosnia stayed within Austro-Hungarian Empire until the beginning of the First World War. This was just a small part of wealthy past, which turned Bosnia and Herzegovina to one of the biggest open museums of the old civilisations.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is located in the west side of the Balkan Peninsula. Surrounded by Croatia from the north, west and south-west, Serbia from the east and Monte Negro from the south-east, the country spreads over the 51,129 square kilometres. Based on the latest information available, total population amounts to approximately 4 million people. Bosnia and Herzegovina can be geographically and historically divided into two regions: north region called “Bosnia” and south region known as “Herzegovina”.

The capital of the country is Sarajevo. Other important cities, in respect of natural and historical heritage, are Mostar, Banja Luka, Bihac, Tuzla and Zenica which are also regional centres.

A rich historical heritage is not the only thing that Bosnia and Herzegovina can offer. A small country such as B&H is well known for its beautiful landscapes. The amazing thing about B&H is that in only three hours drive you can ski in the mountains and swim in the Adriatic Sea. That is exactly what makes it a perfect destination for your vacation. The name Bosna comes from the old word “bosana” which means water that is abounded Bosnian resource. Numerous rivers have carved deep canyons in central Dinaric Alps that spread along the country. These mountains have hosted XIV Olympic Games that took place in 1984 in Sarajevo. Therefore, we invite you to come and explore by yourself this yet undiscovered pearl of Europe. We strongly believe that this journey will stay in your best memories forever.
