Monuments ( Stecci) are medieval mortuary monuments built of cut stone in the shape of plates, boxes, crates with the base or pillars. They usually have irregular shapes and their surfaces often have ornaments and inscriptions, and most are spread by medieval Bosnia and Hum. Related to the "Bosnian church" and Bogumils although some opposed to claiming that the Monuments - Ste?ci expression and usage of certain historical time in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and belong to all its inhabitants, because they are buried under them and the Orthodox and Catholics.

In BiH the most tombstones are located in Herzegovina municipalities, Nevesinje and Konjic by 3.000, Stolac (until the Dayton Peace Agreement) 2.337, Gacko 2.219, Bileca 1.739 etc. Most tombstones are located in two necropolises: in the near of Nevesinje, Krekov - 425 tombstones and Milavici –Brekovici municipality with 352 tombstones. The largest number of decorations on tombstones is located on the Radimlja and Boljun, Stolac municipality, and these two necropolises tombstones in our country are among the most important and most interesting.

Radimlja is the most famous location of medieval tombstones in Herzegovina. The Radimlja Necropolis is located near Stolac. It presents the one of the most valuable mediaeval monuments in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Most of the tombstones of this necropolis, known as stecak, date from the 15th and 16th centuries. The most reliable evidence of the date of origin is an epitaph on one of the stecaks denoting the time when the Hrabren-Miloradovic family which ruled the wider area of the Stolac, Mostar and Popovo polje. The Necropolis near Stolac, Radimlja, comprising a large number of medieval, monolithic (‘stecak’) tombstones, diverse in form and high in artistic quality, is one of the most important medieval monuments in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Before the 1992-1995 war, the Stolac region and the town of Stolac was one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s most attractive tourist destinations, not only in the south east but in Herzegovina as a whole, with local and a significant number of foreign visitors. The number of monuments, the diversity and representation of all the basic Ste?ak shapes, the relatively high artistic quality of the work, the wealth of decorative elements, relief carvings and epitaphs referring to known historical persons, as well as its unusual site and accessibility, are the reasons why the necropolis with Ste?ak tombstones of Radimlja is one of the most valuable mediaeval monuments in BiH.
